Lexus to Reveal New ‘NX’ Compact Crossover at Beijing Motor Show

Lexus will unveil its new luxury compact crossover, the “Lexus NX”, at the 2014 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition* to be held in Beijing, China from April 20 to April 29. Lexus will exhibit the “NX 200t” equipped with a newly developed 2.0-liter turbo engine and the “NX 300h” equipped with a 2.5-liter hybrid system.
Evolved from the “Lexus LF-NX” concept introduced at the Frankfurt International Motor Show and the Tokyo Motor Show in 2013, the NX is Lexus’ first entry into the luxury compact crossover segment. Designed under the development concept “Premium Urban Sports Gear”, the NX was developed as a sport utility vehicle with high functionality and an edgy design fitted perfectly to an urban lifestyle.
Interior and Exterior Features

The aggressive styling embodies a sporty, urban SUV with dynamic driving and quick acceleration.

Progressive and modern L-shaped three-bulb LED headlamps emphasize the unique personality of Lexus design.

The NX’s powerful performance is expressed by placing emphasis on the tires and fusing the front and rear wheel flares to the solid, muscular vehicle cabin beginning from the spindle grille.

The side profile is accentuated by a peaked roofline set towards the rear that simultaneously provides ample head-room for rear seat occupants while creating a powerful silhouette.

Attractive and sporty L-shaped LED rear combination lamps in concert with a spindle-grille-themed rear view convey SUV power.

As if etched from the same sheet of metal, the silver frame of the central instrument cluster is embedded into the instrument panel. This, in combination with synthetic leather kneepads that offer firm support to the driver and passenger, symbolize the firm and strong frame intrinsic to SUVs. The contrasting, yet harmonious blend of metal and synthetic leather lend a sense of refined quality to the cabin. In addition, as befitting the vehicle concept, the instrument cluster is flush with operational functions.
Other Equipment

The NX will feature the application of a new Remote Touch Interface with touch pad functionality.
The Lexus firsts include a wireless charger in the center console for smartphones and other mobile devices, a Panoramic View Monitor, a comprehensive Multi-information Display, a G sensor display and a boost pressure meter.

Toyota Develops Engines with Improved Thermal, Fuel Efficiency

Toyota Motor Corporation aims to further increase the environmental performance of its vehicles with a series of newly-developed, highly fuel-efficient engines that achieve outstanding thermal efficiency
1. The new engines leverage combustion and loss-reduction technologies Toyota has refined in its dedicated hybrid engines, and will achieve fuel efficiency improvements of at least 10 percent2 over current vehicles. The engines will be used in models scheduled for partial redesign in the near future, and a total of 14 new engine variations will be introduced globally by 2015.
One of the engines is a 1.3-liter gasoline engine in which Toyota is employing the Atkinson cycle3―normally used in dedicated hybrid engines. Use of the Atkinson cycle provides an increased expansion ratio and reduces waste heat through a high compression ratio (13.5), resulting in superior thermal efficiency. Toyota aims to further improve the fuel efficiency of the engine by utilizing other innovations including an intake port with a new shape that generates a strong tumble flow (whereby the air-fuel mixture flows in a vertical swirl) inside the cylinder, and a cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system paired with Variable Valve Timing-intelligent Electric (VVT-iE) technology to improve combustion and reduce loss. As a result, the new engine will have a maximum thermal efficiency of 38 percent 4―top-level among mass-produced engines. The new features, combined with idling stop and other functions, will lead to fuel efficiency gains of approximately 15 percent2 by comparison with current vehicles.
Meanwhile, a 1.0-liter engine jointly developed with Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. has achieved maximum thermal efficiency of 37 percent4 due to a similar tumble flow-generating intake port, a cooled EGR system, and a high compression ratio. Combination with the idling-stop function and various other fuel consumption reduction technologies allows vehicles to achieve a maximum fuel efficiency improvement of approximately 30 percent2 over current vehicles.
